BBSCON 1993
Broadmoor Hotel - Colorado Springs, Colorado
History and Lore of the BBS (How it Began - The First BBS)
Ward Christensen, CBBS (Moderator)
August 27, 1993 - 1:30pm (Ballroom)
Ward Christensen (creator of XMODEM and co-creator of the first BBS, CBBS), Chuck Forsberg (creator of YMODEM and ZMODEM) and Nick Anis (Associate of John Dvorak and publisher of many books on technology and other subjects) hold a free-form reminiscence and discussion of old-time technology issues. Christensen is not comfortable as a public speaker and the other panelists and audience members dominate the conversations. Regardless, he does interject with intense stories from the past, reaching to the events that led to the creation of the first BBS.
Medium Notes:
Age and significant wear on the original audio tape source results in a "warbling" tone to the end of the first part of this panel, through which the sentences are still coherent, but bothersome to listen to. There is a very slight chance this recording is not from BBSCON 93, but BBSCON 92, the first BBSCON held.

Subject: ONE BBSCON 1993 - I was there. It was great.
I am 82 years of age now. It is 2023. I was born in 1941. I started my BBS in 1982. I had to write the software myself. Those were great days. So much fun and so many great people.
I am still online! When the world wide web was invented I moved to the web. My site Howard's Notebook came with me. When YouTube was invented I set up my "BBS" on YouTube. https://youtube.com/hnbbs
/> From time to time, after all this time, someone will log into YouTube and find our site.
Sometime someone will visit Howard's Notebook on YouTube and live a comment. "There were no computers in 1982." I don't get upset. I just wish they could have lived and seen what people did in those days. The great fun we all had.
"Yes, Virginia there were people online in 1982, and before, there is a Santa Claus."
